Serve the Community
God calls us to love and serve our neighbors, and we want to make serving the community simple for Grace Bible Church attendees. By stepping outside the walls of the church and reaching out to our community, we are able to make a huge impact in our neighborhoods.
So Who Can Serve?
Anyone! We aim to make serving simple and offer a variety of service opportunities that accommodate individuals, families, and community groups. Let us help you take the next step in reaching the Hampton Roads area!
- Serve the City: This is a monthly service event that is organized and hosted here at Grace Bible Church. We’ve already set up the projects. Just sign up and show up!
- Serve with our Local Partners: We partner with nonprofits throughout the community who focus on serving the homeless and near-homeless in our cities. To learn more, please contact one of our local partners below or email Melanie Lee at email@example.com.
- DIY Service Projects: We want to offer easy ways to get involved even if your schedule doesn’t align with in-person serving opportunities. Take a look at our DIY service projects that are easy for you, your family, or your Community Group to do on your own time and still make an impact in our community!
The Focus Center
At the Focus Center we work in one neighborhood at a time to see individuals, families, and neighbors grow into a loving, supportive, cooperative, and successful community.
Jobs for Life
By training, equipping, and connecting churches, ministries, and businesses in communities all over the world, Jobs for Life is helping the local Church prepare men and women for meaningful work through honest relationships, mentoring, Biblically-based training, and an ongoing community of support.
Judeo-Christian Outreach Center
Judeo Christian Outreach Center’s (JCOC) mission is to empower homeless families and individuals to recover from crisis situations and return to being self-supporting, productive, and independent members of our community. JCOC provides a daily community dinner, food pantry, family food box program, emergency housing for 50 residents, transitional housing for homeless veterans, permanent supportive housing for chronically homeless and disabled adults, a rapid rehousing program, and a winter shelter program in collaboration with the City of Virginia Beach.
People in Need (PiN) Ministries
PiN exists to provide food, clothing, shelter, and free medical care for people that are either homeless or extremely poor. The ultimate focus is to help the homeless of Hampton Roads transform their lives by meeting them where they are and sharing a God that loves them and wants a relationship with them.
In 2017, The Union Mission celebrates 125 years of serving the poor and homeless in the Hampton Roads community. As the largest provider of services in the region the Men’s and Women and Children’s Shelter serve over 375 men, women and children daily. People come to The Mission when they have nowhere else to turn. They are provided with three meals a day, toiletries, a place to shower, clean clothing and a safe place to lay their heads. Once physical needs are met job and life skills training is offered to help people overcome their homelessness. Classes are offered in computer skills, budgeting and finance, resume writing and interview skills. Other classes are offered in conflict resolution, relapse prevention, anger management, healthy boundaries and more. Most importantly the Gospel of Christ is shared with each person and loves are changed for eternity. The Union Mission Ministries does not receive any state or federal funding but relies solely on the generosity of the community.
Grace Community Garden
Grace’s Community Garden started with a simple vision back in 2012: What if we could use our own church property to feed the hungry?
A few green-thumbed friends gathered together, chose a plot of land at the back of our property, and began to build our Community Garden. Under the leadership of this team, the garden flourished and we saw several bountiful harvests!
Since early 2014, the Community Garden has been under the leadership of Tom Etter, a Virginia Beach Certified Master Gardener. Tom stepped in at a time we needed him the most! We were able to transition from using only half the garden at a time to using the entire designated section of land. Volunteers serve in the garden monthly at Serve the City events, and even more frequently during peak harvest seasons.
We have harvested and donated thousands of pounds of organic produce to local ministries like PiN and Union Mission, which serve the homeless and at-risk. These organizations usually receive shelf-stable donations from grocery stores. Our fresh, organic produce speaks a clear message to those in times of difficult transitions: we care for you; we’ve planned this for you; you matter to God.

Operation Homefront is able to help military families overcome many of the challenges inherent in military life. The result is stronger, more stable, and more secure military families. Their programs include short-term critical assistance, long-term stability, and recurring family support.
NEW! Operation Blessing
Operation Blessing International (OBI) is a humanitarian organization dedicated to demonstrating God’s love by alleviating human need and suffering in the United States and around the world.
Whether it’s a natural disaster, like Hurricane Florence, a tornado or earthquake, Operation Blessing relief teams give hope and help when it’s needed most, including distributing food, safe water, medicine and other vital supplies to meet the immediate needs of those suffering. Then, to help communities begin the long-term recovery process, teams assist with debris clean-up and repairs—including Extreme Blessing Home Makeover projects in the U.S.—as well as microenterprise projects to help boost the economy, recover jobs and get families back on their feet.
NEW OPPORTUNITY: There is an OB team in Lumberton, North Carolina, who is helping to restore the community after Hurricane Florence. Volunteers are needed to help with debris clean-up and repairs. Volunteers are needed for any number of days and can start helping now; a team will be set up in Lumberton until further notice. If you are interested in serving on a team from Grace Bible Church, please sign up here.
